The photos below display representative examples of
different handle shapes I make.
To produce what I feel to be some of the finest cork
handles made, I hand pick each cork ring in an initial
sorting process and then further refine the cork rings
used in the handle through a very rigorous selection
process. This ensures that each handle is as
imperfection free as possible. We then fill the
few remaining voids with a durable filler.
Although some would say that sanding with fine grit
sandpaper is unnecessary, we use sandpaper up to 3000
grit which results in a handle that is smooth like
silk. Each handles is then treated to allow easy
cleaning in the future.
Our standard approach with handles is to also
incorporate wood which matches with that used in the
rods reel seat insert. These trim bands use two
contrasting type of woods which will always match the
thread color scheme on the rod. With these wooden trim
bands we go to great lengths to ensure even blending at
the joint between wood and cork.
If a rod requires a fighting butt or rear grip, we use
wood from the same parent burl (to the reel seat insert
and handle trim bands) for the construction of the
fighting butt or rear grip.
To ensure durability on all rods that require fighting
butts and rear grips, we finish the butt end with
rubberized composite cork. We often use this material to
also create the tip ring in the handle.
As I'm sure you can imagine, each customer's hand shape
and size is different. As a result, we often
design handle shapes to fit a particular customer's
needs. Please contact us to discuss handles shapes
if you so desire. We feel that a customized handle
is one of the true measures of a custom rod.
